How to Get a Lakshadweep Entry Permit?
Visiting Lakshadweep is not as complicated as it sounds. Yes, you need a permit. Yes, there is a process.
WHY IS A PERMIT REQUIRED?
Why Does Lakshadweep Require an Entry Permit?
Lakshadweep is classified as a Protected Area under Indian law — specifically under the Foreigners (Protected Areas) Order, 1958, extended to cover Indian nationals as well. This was done for three important reasons:
1. Ecological preservation: Lakshadweep is one of India's most ecologically sensitive regions. Its coral reefs, seagrass beds, and marine biodiversity are irreplaceable. Unregulated tourism can cause permanent damage. The permit system controls visitor numbers and ensures that those who visit understand and respect the ecosystem.
2. Protecting local communities: The islands' population of approximately 65,000 people live in a small, close-knit society with unique cultural norms. The permit system helps manage the social impact of tourism.
3. National security: Given its strategic location in the Arabian Sea, the islands fall under certain security protocols that require visitor registration.
The permit is not intended to discourage tourism — it is intended to protect everything that makes Lakshadweep worth visiting. Think of it as a golden ticket to one of India's last truly pristine places.
Step By Step Process For Indian Tourists
Complete Guide - Step by Step (2026)
Good news: As of 2025, the permit process for Indian tourists has been significantly simplified. You no longer need a local sponsor from Lakshadweep, and the police clearance certificate requirement has been removed for most tourists. The process is now self-service online.
Step 1: Book Your Accommodation First
Before you apply for your permit, you need a confirmed accommodation booking. The permit application requires your accommodation details and a booking confirmation letter.
When you book with Beachside Agatti Resort, we immediately send you:
- A formal booking confirmation letter (required for your permit application)
- A personalised permit application guide tailored to your travel dates
- A WhatsApp support contact for any questions
Step 2: Apply Online on the Official e-Permit Portal
Visit the official Lakshadweep Administration e-permit portal: https://epermit.utl.gov.in
Create an account using your mobile number or email ID. Begin a new permit application.
Step 3: Fill in the Application Form
You will need to provide the following information:
- Full legal name (as per government ID)
- Date of birth
- Nationality
- Permanent address
- Purpose of visit (select: Tourism)
- Travel dates (arrival and departure)
- Accommodation name and address (Beachside Agatti Resort, Agatti Island, Lakshadweep — 682553)

Fill in the application separately for each travelling adult. Children under 18 can be included under a parent's application.
Step 4: Upload Required Documents
- Aadhaar card (front and back) — OR — Passport (bio page)

Step 5: Pay the Permit Fee
The permit fee is ₹200 per person per day of your stay. This fee goes towards waste management, sanitation, and ecological protection of the islands.
Payment is accepted online via UPI, net banking, or credit/debit card.
Example: 2 adults staying for 5 days = 2 × 5 × ₹200 = ₹2,000 total fee.
Step 6: Wait for Approval
Processing time: 7 to 14 working days.
Apply at least 20 days before your travel date to allow comfortable buffer time.
The approved permit will be sent to your registered email address as a PDF document.
Step 7: Carry Your Permit
Print a copy of your permit AND save it on your phone. You will need to show it:
When you book with Beachside Agatti Resort, we immediately send you:

Rules and Regulations
Important Rules for Visitors to Lakshadweep
Alcohol is strictly prohibited
Lakshadweep is a dry Union Territory under Indian law. Carrying, consuming, or distributing alcohol on any island is a criminal offence and can result in arrest, fines, and deportation. There are no exceptions — not even in hotel rooms. Please plan accordingly.
No plastic bags or single-use plastic
Bringing plastic bags to the islands is prohibited. Carry reusable cloth bags. Many items like plastic straws and cutlery are also banned. This is strictly enforced.
Do not touch, break, or collect coral
Damaging coral reefs is illegal under the Wildlife Protection Act and attracts heavy fines. Do not walk on coral, pick up coral pieces, or touch coral during diving and snorkelling.
Dress modestly in villages.
The islands are predominantly Muslim. While beachwear is fine on the beach, cover up when walking through villages, visiting mosques, or interacting with local residents.
Photography near military installations is prohibited
Do not photograph the airport runway, military equipment, or personnel.
Respect local timings
During prayer times (especially Friday afternoon), some activities may be paused out of respect for local religious practices.
No fireworks
Fireworks and open fires on the beach are prohibited without specific government permission.
